Clarke calls provincial dredging investment promising

North Sydney – Cape Breton North MLA Cecil Clarke is calling $300,000 in advanced provincial funding to develop a detailed design for the Sydney Harbour dredging project a promising investment.

“This shows a serious commitment from the provincial government that builds on the efforts of the Ottawa delegation,” said Clarke. “Further to this announcement, I continue to work with our federal counterparts on finalizing support for the dredging project.”

Clarke is also extending thanks to Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Bill Estabrooks and Deputy Premier Frank Corbett for continuing to work on the dredging file.

Clarke met with Prime Minister Harper last month and discussed the importance of the dredging project as a motivator to economic development in Cape Breton.

“These things take time and planning – we want to ensure that a plan is in place that allows for a joint effort,” added Clarke. “I am encouraged by the provincial government response today and the ongoing dialogue I continue to have at the federal level.”

Clarke has maintained that the dredging of Sydney Harbour would create an open port for international businesses to reach mainland destinations.

“This project is a priority for our region and an opportunity to tell the rest of the world that Cape Breton is open for business.”
