NDP backpedal on commitment to support Liberation Therapy trials
Nov 02 2011

HALIFAX, NS – Progressive Conservative MLA Alfie MacLeod says it’s shameful that the Minister of Health led the NDP Caucus in a vote against pursing clinical trials of Liberation Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis.

In April, Minister Maureen MacDonald stated, “We've said as a province we certainly will participate in clinical trials when the scientific panel recommends that clinical trials proceed.”

In June, the federal government gave the go-ahead for clinical trials after the scientific working panel unanimously agreed that a clinical trial should proceed at the Phase 1 and Phase 2 levels.

“This Minister has said that Nova Scotia will participate in clinical trials and the MS community took the Minister at her word when she said Nova Scotia would step up to the plate when the federal government did,” said MacLeod. “That time has come but when I introduced a motion in support of the clinical trials, the NDP voted it down. Are the NDP now refuting the findings of the scientific panel?”

MacLeod says he hopes this commitment isn’t just another promise to Nova Scotians that the NDP are going to break.
